Vawdrey moves with the times
Wheelie Waste provides a range of Waste management services to over 200,000 properties each Week. To make that task a little easier the company has worked closely with Vawdrey to create a new design B-double live floor.
Vawdrey has designed the A and B trailer so that the floors are the same height, allowing a smooth product flow between the trailers.
It was back in 1972 when the Barton family first secured the garbage collection contract for the City of Warrnambool. The family business grew further in 1991 when Gary Barton established Wheelie Waste, since when it has been very successful in winning multiple contracts right across country Victoria.
While the Wheelie Waste fleet is made up of 75 trucks, all fitted with an assortment of waste equipment, just the one trailer graces the company’s facilities: its newest order from Vawdrey.
“I needed to be able to move at least 150 cubic metres of waste at a time, so I started looking at the different combinations available. I went to Vawdrey and they put their engineers to work and came up with a design that perfectly suits our needs,” says Wheelie Waste’s Managing Director, Gary Barton.
The result is a B-Double live floor based on Vawdrey’s popular Bulkliner design. Carting co-mingled recycling, the unit is now out working across country Victoria 24 hours a day, covering a large distance right up to the New South Wales border, before heading back into Melbourne to service Visy’s recycling facility. Wheelie Waste bulk hauls all recycling to Visy from across Victoria, amounting to thousands of tonnes each year.
“All of our previous vehicles have been single units, so this B-Double allows us to double the load we are carrying. This is particularly important when you consider the price of fuel these days, you need to take every advantage you can get.”Other brands of live floors can have issues with B-Doubles, as the product frequently gets caught between the two trailers. To overcome this Vawdrey has designed the floors of the trailers at the same height, allowing the A trailer to back into the B trailer for a smooth product flow.

Staying covered
Also fitted to the trailer is an electronic tarp system from Razor International. While the system is a standard product in its range, the unique design of the B-Double meant that in this case the drive system could not be placed in its usual position, and Vawdrey invited Razor to come up with a solution. “We normally place the drive system on the front wall of the trailer, but because that was essentially a door we tucked it into a little space we created on the top of the trailer,” explains Geoff Watson from Razor International, who is so pleased with the result that he now plans to offer it as an option to everyone requesting an electric tarp.
“We think it is great that companies like Vawdrey come up with vehicles that increase efficiency for customers and were pleased to be involved in the order.”
Gary adds, “The entire process of building this trailer with Vawdrey has been great. Their professionalism and after sales service are fantastic. We went with them because they make an excellent product and are on the cutting edge of the industry, and I’m glad we did. I think this trailer will be one of many more to come.”
